Serve, Preserve, Honor
he United States Congress created the Veterans History Project (VHP) in 2000
as part of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Its ongoing
mission is to collect and archive the personal recollections of U.S. wartime veterans
to honor their service and share their stories with current and future generations.
The Project also collects stories from homefront civilians who worked in support of
our armed forces.
The Veterans History Project relies on volunteers throughout the nation to collect
veteran's stories from all U.S. conflicts from World War I to the present. The VHP
then archives its collections at the Library of Congress and makes them available to
researchers and the public. In addition to compiling a unique archive for scholars,
the Veterans History Project intends to inspire future generations with these stories
of service to our country.
As a partner to this outstanding program, the Central Florida WW2 Museum will
share veteran recollections collected in its own efforts to preserve the legacy of our
World War II veterans. As this organization grows, so will our ability to find
veterans and record their stories for future educational programs. If you are a
veteran or know a veteran living in the Central Florida area, we encourage you
to contact us to schedule an interview.
Otherwise, anyone interested in preserving the memory of a World War II veteran
can do so by interviewing the veteran or homefront civilian with an audio or video
recorder. Interviews can be submitted to the Central Florida WW2 Museum where
they will be catalogued into our archive and copied for submission to the Veterans
History Project. For your convenience, the rules and guidelines are available on
this website.
By recording these historic treasures, you are contributing to the permanent col-
lections of the Central Florida World War II Museum and the Library of Congress.
When you participate, you make history.
