We traveled to Toccoa, Georgia to join the Stephens County Currahee Military Weekend as they
payed tribute to the 501st, 506th, 511th and 517th Parachute Infantry Regiments who trained at
Camp Toccoa during World War II.

Following the success of the HBO series 'Band of Brothers' which featured Camp Toccoa in Episode 1,
the residents of Toccoa, Georgia have made a tremendous effort to rediscover their unique heritage
and preserve the memory of all the paratroopers who trained at Camp Toccoa before being shipped
out to fight in Europe and the Pacific.

Now, almost 65 years after the end of World War II, the Stephens County Chamber of Commerce,
the Currahee Military Museum, and Mount Currahee stand alone as a true national treasure dedicated
to preserving the history of the United States Airborne.

Visitors to this year's Currahee Mlitary Weekend were once again treated to a full schedule of
events honoring a cadre of men tough enough to earn the title, paratrooper.

We were fortunate to see familiar and new faces return to the site where it all began.  Veterans like
Reed Pelfrey, Jake McNiece, and Ed Shames were available to sign autographs and discuss old times.

This year's Currahee Challenge, 3 miles up - 3 miles down, was run by half of the Central Florida
World War II Museum's board of directors.  We are happy to acknowledge everyone made it to the
top.  Unfortunately, no one ran it under 50 minutes meaning we did not qualify for the paratroops.
Maybe next year we'll be a little faster.

If you have not been to Toccoa, we recommend this destination as a stop in your travels.  Located
approximately an hour and a half north of Atlanta, Toccoa offers small town Southern charm and a
valuable educational experience.
